On Sunday, the German labor union Verdi called on all employees to strike at seven different Amazon locations over a pay dispute. Workers at three Amazon warehouses in the states of Saxony and Hesse went on strike on Monday, coinciding with All Saintsâ Day. It is expected that workers at four more locations will go on strike on Tuesday and could last anything between 24 hours and three days. The exact amount of protestors is still unclear, but Verdi Union Secretary, Andre Scheer believes that thousands of employees will part-take. According to a Verdi spokesperson, the duration of the strike is open as part of a long-running battle with the U.S. tech giant over better pay and working conditions. The union wants Amazon to recognize the collective agreements in the retail and mail order industry, and to reach an agreement over fair working conditions. In a statement, Verdi representative Orhan Akman said:âIt is unacceptable that a multinational corporation worth billions and (which) makes money hand over fist still refuses to give employees the wage increases that other companies in the industry pay.âAMAZON RESPONSEIn response, Amazon says it already provides good benefits and compensation and a safe working environment for its employees.Amazon customers usually wait until Prime Day arrives before ordering products they want from the platform. As buyers rush to Amazon during this time to make their purchases, the companyâs warehouses are busier than usual.A spokesperson for Amazon assures customers that they will still get their orders on time and that the strike will have no impact on Amazonâs delivery promise. Germany is Amazonâs most significant market, following the U.S. where Verdi has been in a wage dispute with and organizing strike actions at Amazon in Germany since 2013.
