On Tuesday, it was reported that logistics and shipping company A.P Moller â Maersk has placed an order on two Boeing 777 Freighters (NASDAQ:BA) in its latest move to boost business beyond ocean shipping. It will also buy freight-forwarder Senator International, whose largest business is within air freight, for an enterprise value of roughly $644 million.During the pandemic, many airlines have been forced to park unused passenger jets, driving up demand for cargo space on dedicated freighters at a time when e-commerce has been a lifeline for many during COVID lockdowns.âThe COVID situation has only accelerated the fact that we need to move on this,â Maerskâs chief executive of ocean and logistics, Vincent Clerc, told Reuters.Maersk, which handles one in five containers shipped worldwide is an integrated container logistics company working to connect and simplify its customersâ supply chains. And, as the global leader in shipping services, Maersk aims to expand its services to include more air, and land-based freights with hopes to deliver door-to-door logistical solutions to customers like Walmart and Puma.Boeingâs senior vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing, Ihssane Mounir commented on the news:âWe are delighted to welcome Maerskâs Star Air to the Boeing family of 777 operators and look forward to many years of continued partnership as it grows its air cargo division.ââThe market-leading efficiency and incredible range of the 777 Freighter will provide Maersk flexibility to profitably operate the airplane across its large air freight network.âThe acceleration of the companyâs ongoing transformation is fueled by strong financial results during the pandemic from a container shipping company to an integrated logistics company.Final third-quarter EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization) tripled to $6.9 billion.
