Amid the burgeoning global demand for electric vehicles, Mercedes Benz Group (ETR:MBGn) has announced a promising second-quarter performance in 2023. Their sales increased by 6%, selling a total of 515,700 vehicles, a remarkable feat driven by the rising interest in all-electric and premium vehicles.

Regional Sales Overview
‍

In its principal markets—Europe, Asia, and North America—Mercedes experienced impressive sales growth:

  • Germany 23% increase
  • China 12% increase
  • US 6% increase

‍

Conversely, the company experienced a drop of 12% in other global regions, tallying the sales to 20,700 vehicles.

Electric vehicles (EVs) remained at the forefront of the company's growth this quarter. Passenger car sales saw a significant jump of 123%, reaching 56,300 units sold. Mercedes' top-tier models, including AMG, Maybach, and G-class, contributed to this trend, showing a solid 12% growth.

Breakthrough Models in the EV Market

The figures reveal an astounding evolution in Mercedes' electric vehicle market, as sales of battery-electric cars more than doubled in Q2, clocking at 56,300 units — 123% increase. This growth can be attributed to three models which surged by:

  • EQA: 73%
  • EQB: 83%
  • EQE: 157%

Despite the EQE SUV only hitting the market in mid-December.

Furthermore, the EQE SUV, initially only available as an AMG, surpassed the sedan model in sales. Mercedes reported sales of 10,000 units for the EQE SUV, whereas the EQE sedan achieved 9,000 units in sales. Another electric model, the larger EQS SUV, accounted for 10,900 vehicles sold in the year's first half.

Comparison with Competitor BMW
‍

Despite the staggering growth in EV sales, electric cars only accounted for 10.9% of the total sales in Q2. BMW, their primary rival, reported a higher total BEV sales and a BEV share of 14.1% for the same period. However, Mercedes fared slightly better in the German market, with an electric share of 17%.

It's important to note that the Mercedes-Benz passenger cars sales figures do not account for Smart's electric cars sold via their joint venture with Geely. These sales are included in the statistics from Mercedes-Benz Cars, with a total of 61,200 BEVs reported for Q2, bumping Smart sales to 4,900 units.

Sales Overview for First Half of 2023
‍

For the first half of 2023, Mercedes-Benz Cars sold 102,600 BEVs worldwide, indicating a 121% increase. With total sales of 1.02 million vehicles, the electric vehicle share for this period sits at ten per cent.

In the vans segment, Mercedes-Benz reported sales of 5,100 electric vans in Q2, an 18% increase compared to last year. With approximately 120,000 units sold across all drive types, the electric share for Mercedes vans stands at 4.25%.
